WHAT IS SEROTONIN?
Serotonin is a substance in the body that affects how happy you feel. It is also an important element when it comes to a good night’s sleep. Melatonin, a hormone in your body that makes you sleepy, is generated from serotonin. In addition, this substance also ensures that you are less hungry.
Researchers suspect that serotonin deficiency can cause memory loss. Scientists think more research is needed, but there are already a number of studies available that find a link between serotonin deficiency and memory loss.
SYMPTOMS OF SEROTONIN DIFICIENCY
There are a number of symptoms that indicate that you have a serotonin deficiency. First of all, you notice that you are more hungry and that you are more prone to sugars or fats. This can be recognised if, for example, you have had a bad day at work. You feel less good and are more inclined to make less healthy choices.
It can also cause you to sleep worse. Because you produce less serotonin, the production of melatonin is also inhibited. This makes you feel less sleepy and you’ll wake up a lot at night. If you feel sleepy, you are also more inclined to drink caffeine. More caffeine in turn inhibits the production of melatonin, which eventually makes you sleep even worse.
How can we increase serotonin? Unfortunately there is no serotonin in food, but tryptophan is. This substance is mainly present in soybeans, sunflower seeds, pineapples, nuts and bananas. Tryptophan causes the serotonin level in your body to rise. Eating these nutrients makes you feel happier.
In addition, a good workout also increases the serotonin level. For many people, sports provide a moment of happiness, which not only makes you look better, but also makes you feel fitter.
Finally, getting some sunlight is also a good way to produce more serotonin. So take that nice walk during your lunch break!
